There is a period of time, that is now lost to time, where the future of the Jurassic Park franchise was significantly more exciting than the eventual Jurassic World. The very end of the third movie shows the audience what the future holds, with enough ambiguity that the story could truly, go anywhere.
Jurassic Park 3’s abandoned screenplay was set partially on Isla Sorna and partially on the mainland, as the writers understood the need to diversify both the story and the location. If the fourth movie had “balanced the science and adventure elements effectively” then the natural progression would surely be: isolated pockets of the mainland.
